Exercise One: Preparing a Textured Ground
For this exercise, I decided to use several different types of support applied to a main support. To bind them, I used white emulsion and was quite surprised at the strength it held, as well as the texture created of its own accord. Once dry, I used paint to create an interesting accent, manipulating the crevices with darker colours to exploit their depth.

I thoroughly enjoyed this exercise and the result is utterly stunning and almost cosmic in its appearance. I thoroughly enjoyed this exercise and the process used. Regardless of the outcome, the process itself is very therapeutic and cathartic and is definitely something which excites me and that I will use again in the future.
Exercise Two: Mixing Materials into Paint
Similar to the previous exercise, I applied materials to the support with emulsion. The materials I applied were mixed leaves, twigs and soil. I allowed this to dry and then applied several layers of different coloured paints, which I tried to keep as natural as possible to honour the nature within the piece. Again, I exploited the crevices formed naturally and applied the darkest areas of paint within these. For this piece, I built my colours up from light to dark as this felt the most natural route and allowed it to develop to its natural end.
I think this has to be my favourite piece to have created throughout this whole process. I find it fascinating and there are so many things to see and feel throughout it that looking at it once does not allow you to fully appreciate. There is such a rustic feel to the piece and the addition of the natural materials really does make it feel truly authentic. As with the previous exercise, this technique is completely one I wish to attempt with the human form in mind.
